maya angelou, poet & life lover
born the summer of 1974, my mother a school teacher & artist, my father an economist & musician, wanted me to have a name of power & purpose so they agreed on earth. i know, big name for an infant yet somehow my parents intuitively knew it suited my essence & would guide me on my life path.
i was raised in California, elementary school in SF Bay Area & high school in San Diego. I was an outgoing child with a vivid imagination and complex interpersonal life. my childhood was painted with a good deal of bright moments along with many intense challenges & difficulties.
at 17 years old I set out to declare my independence by backpacking around Europe and spent the following 3 decades traveling, teaching or living in Columbia, Guatemela, Belize, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicargua, Mexico & Spain.
as a birth doula, i have twenty years of experience supporting women giving birth at home, in water, in the hospital with midwives, doctors & shamans.
as a sex & birth educator, i have lectured & taught hundreds of people at colleges & organizations in the U.S. & Mexico,
about: relationships, intimacy intelligence, sacred sexuality, radical body autonomy, being body + sex-positive, & erotic purpose.
since 2005, i have trained nearly 300 people to become doulas in my Good Birth Keeper program, many of who are chiropractors, nurses, midwives, and therapists.
Mexico has been a major part of my life since my father moved there in 1990 & then in 2008, i moved to Riviera Maya with my daughters, their dad (my former husband), a chiropractor. for 11 years i called Playa Del Carmen & Tulum home. my daughters grew up going to school in the jungle, swimming & scuba diving in the Caribbean sea. i continued my work as a birth doula, taught yoga, studied Spanish, and learned about ancient Mayan healing practices.
